OK, I thought it might be cool if we had a thread where everyone could post any scans of Mastodon articles, interviews or reviews from any magazines they may have. For time purposes I'll just scan the text from the articles if I need to crop the scans at all

So, here's mine:

I have a few more, (a great live review, an article on Brent's tattoos and quite a big article from Metal Hammer about Blood Mountain) which I will post when I have time.

The article on Brent's tattoos:

Until my daughter said ''oh thats Napoleon Dynamite'' i always guessed that was BigfuckingJohn himself. Shows my age i guess. Air drumming eh, could be mistaken for a bit of air fire eating.

Regarding articles The Feb issue of Revolver has a good interview with Mastodon done by Dave Grohl, i think it was done by phone. i would have just read it in the shop, but there was the coolest artwork of the band by Romano that i knew i had to frame it which i have now done.

The faces of the band are at the lower end of the picture, amongst the shadows and undergrowth, there are these patterns around them almost like psychedelic thistles and other ornate stuff, as you look upwards the trees are viewed as if your're lying down looking through a wide angle lens. The sun at the top of the picture has Grohls face with white eyes, almost looking Christ-like, before framing the picture i cut out a suitable sized Blood Mountain logo from another mag, and put it over his face, no disrespect to him, but i wanted this to be just about the band. It looks even more amazing in a frame, i'm real proud of it. I even took Stevie Ray Vaughan out of the frame so i could use it. And he'd been in there years.
BigJon
You took out Stevie Ray!

Yeah I wish I was as cool as Napoleon Dynamite. sad.gif

I find it highly ironic that Brent is saying in the old Leviathan-era TG interview that he preferred Remission to Leviathan because it was so heavy and that he wanted to make the next album more like it because a) Blood Mountain did not sound like Remission and cool.gif he's now complaining about how they never wanted to scream and had to evolve as musicians to get to the point they're at now.
radu123
he needs to be exposed as the fraud he is. and his witchcraft too

duuuuuuude! what issue was that in?

the blood mountain article was what got me into mastodon. All it took was 'searchlight guitars scour the area like the eye of sauron'.

But in the interview he says he wishes their stuff sounded more like Remission.

Also, I despise it when musicians imply that screaming=immaturity. Just imagine Remission (or, for that matter, any Neurosis album ever) without screaming. It wouldn't work. Screaming just fits the mood of some music, just like singing fits the mood of other music.

Couldn't agree more. I think their real intention is to legitimate their music before mainstream critics by cutting and bashing the screaming, and that's not only lame, it's actually very hypocrite when it comes to metal.

I see where you're coming from. However, you need to understand that they really did grow up (as mentally so musically) in the span of, say, five years since Leviathan came out. It's something like: Mastodon were my favorite band past two days and I listened to them more than to anything else. Aphex Twin is my favorite this morning. It may be Mastodon again tomorrow or in the evening even or it may be Frank Zappa.

No one said they'd have made Remission with melodic vocals rather than screaming were they to record it today. It matches the record and so they speak of it - none of the guys ever bashes the early records because there's some screaming on them. I don't ever remember them bashing screaming whatsoever, by the way. I recall Brent saying "screaming hurts like son of a bitch" and something in the sense of "Yeah, we did it. It was alright. Now we're moving on."

Sorry about the length of the post.

I find it so strange that I love this band's music so much, yet dislike a lot of their tattoos.
radu123
of course, it's easy to forget there's a proven direct correlation between the two

What I obviously meant was that I am disappointed I do not like a majority of their tattoos.

As you already know,
People are artists. Some people only choose one form of art. Some people spread their ideas over many different forms of art.

Steven Wilson is a fair example. I love The Incident Special Edition's artwork, the album itself, his solo album Insurgentes and the artwork/movie trailer for that, No-Man, Bass Communion, and Blackfield.

Phil Anselmo with Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual.

A better example, John Baizley(sp) from Baroness. I like his music a lot. I also like his artwork a lot. Yes, his artwork is inspired from the same source as the music so that they share a similar general theme, but I like a majority of his artwork for other bands as well.

I was just observing that I really don't appreciate many of Mastodon's tattoos. I thought an internet forum was the proper medium to express my thoughts.
