I've heard they have gone back to being 100% brutally heavy. Is this true?

I dunno if I'd call it going back to anything. It's heavy and dark thats for sure but I think it's a very good follow up to somewhere along the highway so it's not straight out of left field or anything.

See I didn't bother with them after Salvation. I loved the full on intensity of their first two albums but they seemed to lose that on Salvation.

Not really Cult Of Luna and The Beyond were/are crushing. Salvation was meandering and ever so slightly dull.

The album kicks so much ass... Ghost Trail is a masterpiece.

Saw them a few days ago and they played some of their new songs. Haven't really listened to this album that much yet so I don't know wich of them it was. But one had this kind of fast guitar part (for Cult of Luna, that is) that gave me goosebumps. And a raging boner, of course.

The end of Ghost Trail is probably the fastest they have ever played.

Awesome stuff.

I did listen to it a few times before i saw them, and have heard it a few more times now. I like it, and it's nice that they've found a better balance between heavier and more mellow parts. Somwhere along etc. etc. was a little too mellow, although it has more than a few highlights.

eternal kingdom was for me definitely heavier, but somewhere had more catchy riffs (yes catchy is a gay word but ima use it anyway)
but then again I dont share the notion of somewhere being too mellow

Found the part i was talking about, about 5:10 into Ghost Trail. Boner!

I'm still playing the piss out of this album, I like that they did a re-release with the dvd included earlier this year which also gets alot of playtime. Would love it if Mastodon would bring them back over here to play with them like they did on the Leviathan tour back in 05!
