I don't understand why Mastodon lets Brent do vocals on so many songs, his voice is so nasal! He actually makes me embarassed to play some Mastodon songs if other people can hear it. He always reminds me of a cat, like, that's what a cat-man would sound like, especially if you hear him live, his voice is just awful. I think he is a total legend, and really cool guy, but his voice is always the only weak part of any Mastodon song, IMO.

I was really disheartened the first time I heard him singing since I was so used to Troy's epic vocals. The first Masto album I heard was Remission (probably still my favourite) and it was just epic, the vocals and instruments were a perfect match. Then I got Leviathan and I heard Blood and Thunder...awesome...I Am Ahab...awesome, then Seabeast...WTF? Who was this this guy singing with nose plugs??? Fortunately Troy delivered some of his most epic lines which just come out of nowhere and make this one of my favourite Mastodon songs ever. Then later on we have Naked Burn which is just Brent at his most nasal. I was really hoping those were going to be Brent's only appearances, but it seems he has replaced Troy as the main vocalist from Blood Mountain till now. I think this is a real pity and I don't undestand why the band has made this decision. I think Troy has got a great singing voice, along with his cool shouting voice. I think the vocals on BM are what has made it my least favourite Mastodon album. I hardly ever listen to it, and actually wouldn't mind never listening to it again TBH. CTS is great though, since Troy has a good presence on it (his parts always elevate the song, best example on CTS is Quintessence - Brent has the whiny verses and Troy has the booming chorus and the low as fuck "Shield failuuurrrrrre" parts, freakin sweet).

Sorry for the long post/rant but I had to get this off my chest. Someone out there has to agree with me.

(Mastodon is still an awesome band and CTS is my most listened to album at the mo, but I really think they bring down their songs when they let Brent do the vocals.)

There are some songs were his vocals is amazing and some were he sounds a little nasal as you said. In my opinion he did a great job on CTS were he does most of the vocals, but some stuf on leviathan sounds not so great like Seabeast. The screams on Blood Mountain and Remission are pretty sweet though

I don't hate it, I have a nasal accent that comes with being from Rochester, but I can see where others would. I also think Troy should do more vocals, he has gotten better every album and he is more consistent live.

Brent's live voice during the Remission Era was fucking superb and epic, then of course the throat infection fucked his shit up.

I read something about his throat infection before and I assumed it was just some temporary thing like flu. Did it actually do permanent damage to his voice?

i really enjoy his singing / screaming on a lot of tracks (won't list the other two records, you can't really tell who's who)

BM = sleeping giant, circle of cysquatch, siberian divide
CTS = oblivion, the czar (particularly that 'i see your face in constellations' part), the last baron
Leviathan = island, megalodon, aqua dementia, hearts alive

i think his vocals on all the leviathan tracks i listed really kick the anus, but his megalodon part is probably my favourite mastodon sing-along. it's really a shame his voice sucks live.

as for the throat infection, i don't know the details of brent's problem, but james labrie of dream theater suffered rupturing of his vocals chords in the mid-90s due to food poisoning, and that really really really fucked him over. like to an almost tragic extent.

he was so fucking good on images and words and awake (some of the best singing i've ever heard), but post-incident whilst he still pulls off cool stuff in the studio, live is 95% of the time nothing but trash

On Leviathan and some Blood Mountain parts I feel Troy or maybe even Brann should've done some lyrics !!

I love how Brann sings on Oblivion, in fact probably the best singing we've ever gotten from Mastodon hails from that song, and I think he'd done a better job taking care of the vocal duties !!

I've never seen Mastodon live, mostly because I'm too young but I've seen live videos and I feel Brent ain't singing as good as he should !!

It's a real shame. I would love to hear how for an example Serj Tankian from SOAD would sound singing for Mastodon. I've always thought about that !!

Record wise, Brent's vocals are great. Some live videos he can stik it up. All that I care about is how he sounded when I saw them live this past April and he was on his A game so you won't hear any complaints from me. I still listen to CTS daily in my car or on my pc and his vocals in The Czar are still my highlights of the album.

I think maybe it's a bit harder with his chicken pickin' style too be able too do both singing and playing the guitar at the same time.

listening to system tonight at work, i got about two songs in to the hypnotize/mesmerize combo and shut it off, daron completely destroyed system of a down with his idiotic drug-addict LA tryhard bullshit. Serj's album, while being infinitely better than Scars on Broadway, was still lacking. daron needs to have some huge accident and lose his vocal chords, then he could crawl back to serj and write kickass guitar shit for serj to ramble over.
