HIGH ON FIRE will begin work on their much-awaited 5th album and follow up to 2007's "Death Is This Communion" this August in Los Angeles with producer Greg Fidelman (Metallica, Slayer, Johnny Cash). The new album will be slated for an early 2010 release. When asked for comment, Pike states, “We look forward to sharing the dark seas of our new riffs and tragic stories. Soon the next saga of High on Fire's world will be known.” The new material will be "heavier, louder, and more intricate." The Oakland-based trio will embark on a string of California live dates prior to touring, kicking off in Eureka, CA on August 7th. They are expected to preview some of the new material at these shows for the very first time.

Early 2010?! I thought it was coming out in fucking october.
pelliottnthunder
Well, they were gonna get started recording earlier, but they got their hands on some really fuckin' good weed.
Starxgamer12
another Greg Fidelman album? That guy has been doing a lot lately.

I hope it isn't mastered at all like Death Magnetic.

How da fuck could an High on Fire album get more heavy, loud and intricate ?

Early 2010? Awww, man. This is gonna' be Crack the Skye all over again! Thank God for the many other kickass albums coming out this fall.

"The new material will be "heavier, louder, and more intricate."

Oh my god. I can't even fathom that.
HASHTHRASH
I've heard demos of four of the songs and they do sound killer. I don't know if the songs I heard were heavier or more intricate, but they definitely sounded like totally kick ass High On Fire songs that I will listen to a million times.

Dez became a father, and had to have some surgery as well, so that's why the song writing has taken a little longer, and that's why they haven't recorded it yet. Dez has an awesome baby boy now.

Well that sounds awesome. In the end, as far as I'm concerned they can take as long as they fuckin' need to make this album amazing. The world can wait with baited breath for the riffgasm that is sure to come. High on Fire are one of those bands that you just trust to do their album and do it right. And by right, I mean really fucking heavy.

Cool stuff! Can't wait to hear it. This band kicks ass

I liked Death is the COmmunion a lot, but I heard HoF's earlier material is not as good. I want to know what people here think of that.

Also, which of HoF's previos albums is the 'best'?

The first two HoF albums (Art of Self Defense and Surrounded by Thieves) are my favorite.
Each album is great, actually. You can't really go wrong with any of them. Although Blessed Black Wings is probably my least favorite...
Just listen to them all and decide for yourself whether you like them or not.

I think Blessed Black wings was pretty awesome...

Really its hard to pick favorites with their albums. They are all incredible and a good listen. Im really excited for this next album.

My favorite is definitely Blessed Black Wings. It has more of the grit to its production that the first two had, but it exhibits much of the progressive songwriting that would also be seen on Death Is This Communion. Lots of very emotional songs on there, too, in my opinion. It feels a little deeper to me than some of the other albums.

After that DITC and Surrounded By Thieves are probably tied. Surrounded by Thieves is extraordinarily heavy, but DITC has some more finessed writing. I'm really looking forward to the upcoming record, because at the rate they're going it's going to be insane.

The Art of Self-Defense is probably in last place for me, but it's still a great album. In fact, the only thing that puts it any lower than the middle two is that the production is a little murkier which somewhat contributes to the heaviness, but overall doesn't do the album justice. I believe the production on Surrounded By Thieves was the best for sheer heaviness.

High on Fire announced the title of their new album!

The album isn't expected to drop until sometime in February, so things could change -- but according to High on Fire frontman Matt Pike, the sludge metal trio's forthcoming LP is tentatively titled 'Snakes for the Divine.' And Pike says its perhaps the most progressive offering the band's ever churned out. Arik Roper will once again be handling the album's artwork.

I seriously can't wait for this album! The song they played at the Dethklok show was kick ass and true to their High on Fire sound.

I wish they would put out a recorded version of Frost Hammer already.

Sounds killer. Can't wait for more info. I'm looking forward to a tracklisting, myself. They always have great song titles.
HASHTHRASH
My god damned buddy heard it and from his description it sounds fucking wicked. I can't wait to check it out. He was pretty stoked on it.

Did he describe the production at all?

I hope it's nothing at all like the new Slayer and Metallica albums... ugh..
PowerSlave
Frost Hammer sounded amazing when I saw them. I can't fucking wait for this album to come out. Will there be in the studio clips again? I fucking hope so.

Art of Self Defense is my favorite album. Blood From Zion man. Than it's Blessed, than Death is this Communion, than Surrounded by Thieves.

I hope not, because when I read that the first thing that came to mind was, "good grief."
