I'm about 2 weeks away from having this for a full year and as it tends to happen I haven't played it in a few months because of all the new releases and older stuff that Ive been listening to. I was watching FUSE at about 3 this morning and Oblivion came on and god damn it reminded me that it is a great fucking song and how much I love this record. I've played it 2x today and will probably play it again a few times tomorrow.
It did get me thinking that I don't recall any negative reviews, or anyone here having any real issues with it. So is there anyone here that doesn't like the record?

It seems anyone who had a problem with it went with the "I'll point out the things I like, but it's not as good as [insert album here]" route. I for one still love the album. As we all know it's very different from prior Mastodon, but really I don't care if it sounds like anything previous or not--it's a damn good album. The only album this year that could possibly knock it out of my number one spot for the year is Baroness's Blue Record, but it's very very close.

I don't know if I'll be able to make myself clear here.
I love it, but it's not surprising and exciting as Leviathan and Blood Mountain. I mean, you'd listen to Capillarian Crest for the first time and say HOLY FUCK I NEVER HEARD SOMETHING LIKE THAT BEFORE. Then The Czar comes along and you say "wow, cool, Mastodon is sounding funky, I could dance to it, even my grandpa could enjoy it".
Not pulling the "sell out" crap, I'm far beyond that, but what was great about Mastodon is that it had to grow up in your head, it was challenging, and so rewarding once you get the point of it. That just didn't happen in the same scale when I heard Crack the Skye.

I honestly haven't listened to the album in it's entirety in over a month or so. There's been great new music pouring into my ears constantly so I'm trying to sit down and absorb it all.

I'm sorta with Rat on this, its a terrific album, one i will enjoy for years to come but it doesn't have the same longevity in a sense that Leviathan or BM had. I've always been able to connect lyrically with Mastodon through the medium of a story which i think was probably the weakest element of CTS, for example in the title track when Kelly delivers "Momma, don't let them take her. Don't let them take her down." is emotionally profound and is one of the few parts where i truly find myself connecting with the song and taking something greater away from the experience.

What if a raging faggot likes it?
Anyways, CTS has risen to the top of my most played albums list. I think 60 or so times all together. Take that as you will but it's my personal favorite Mastodon album.

I have always been someone who loves the first record he hears from a band, so for me Remission will always be special for me, but CTS really is amazing.

I like it, its a great record. But it's not my favorite album. Its probably my least favorite album but thats not saying much considering i like all of the albums pretty much equally.

If you listen to all their albums one after another (which, sad fucker that I am, I did when CTS had been out for a month or so), then it flows really well, and you see the progression
But taken by itself, it hasn't got the agression that made me such a fan of the band in the first place. I still like it, but it's no where near my favourite. Every time I listen to it, I do have the nagging thought...
"Christ, I hope they bring back the heavy riffs next time"

it's a great album, but aside from the title track and divinations, i tend to skip most of the CTS tracks that pop up on a mastodon playlist. for me, there's just way too much focus on soloing, and way too much of the 'chicken-picking' stuff. it's easily my least favorite mastodon album. nothing beats leviathan for me.

I really like listening to crack the skye on the album.
But I think it just doesn't work as well in the live setting.
2009: Let's get really, really high, see mastodon and let our faces melt ( while standing still.) Let's face it, most people stand still and watch crack the skye played.
2005, Leviathan Touring: Let's get drunk, adrenalized, bounce around the room, pit, scream and holler, fog up the windows. Chug a cold beer between songs, and get right back at it.
I dunno about you, but I will take the latter.

I really like it as im tending to move away from heavier metal now, but i still love all the other albums, blood mountains gotta be my number 1 though.

haha stand still? Not for the Boston show. I've never seen a crowd get as into a show or mosh like i saw moshing that time. As soon as the intro of Oblivion started people went fucking nuts and the whole place started moving. People were even moshing to the keyboard and acoustic intro of The Czar. It was unbelievable. That whole set was more intense then when I went to Unholy Alliance Tour

What's a Crack the Skye?
Astro Zombie

A variation of conventional Crack Cocaine that makes the user believe he/she is flying, until the user believes he/she has made a "crack" in the sky and begins to "freak out", until the drug wears off and they cannot remember their hallucination.

Yes, it's a horrible situation, really.
I haven't really listened to CtS since.. I guess the show they played last. But I heard it a solid 200 times before that, so I've had my share. Too much new, good music coming out.

I happen to like Crack the Skye a great deal.
I'd say the first 3 months I had it it was on a constant rotation. I listened to it at least once a day.
But now, I listen to it once in it's entirety every week. Which is more than I listen to their other records put together.
I listen to a couple songs off BM, Leviathan, and Remission every week I think... But I get a weekly dose of 50 minutes of CTS.

On a similar note, does anyone actually prefers the instrumental version of Oblivion to the normal one? I never liked the "lost love, bright eyes fading" vocal part, and the riffs beneath it are so fucking awesome.

Can't agree with you about oblivion, I love all the vocals in that song.
The title track though, seriously I can't play the instrumental loud enough...love it. ( no no I'm not hating on scott kelly's vox....they are great.) last baron I prefer the instrumental too.
