I've been listening to these guys for a while, at first I just thought it was drone and experimental stuff until Hippie Killer arrived in the mail today and I have to say holy fucking tit ripping shit this is awesome. This album is staggeringly heavy and I really don't say that about a lot of shit. If you like older Isis, heavier Boris or anything that sounds like getting dragged into the Mariana trench; then you need to check this out.

Hate Ashbury is one of my all time favorite albums.

Didn't think too many other people knew of em' haha.

If it helps I also own one of the 25 'Heroine Kit' editions of Heroine.
Queequeg
Their guitarist Nick squats on mirrors and wanks over his own arse.
Comely Waif
The vocals really turn me off. But I'll check out Hate Ashbury.

Yeah, Bongripper are pretty sick man.
Ridner

Meh. Sounds like a bunch of kids that got into Pelican and started a similar band. They are even from Chicago. I listened to the song "The People Mover" and I don't hear any doom in it at all. The song isn't even all that HEAVY. Sure, it rocks a fair amount, but Chicago has given us such rad fucking music that I expect more.

Honestly, I don't hear any Pelican aside from a few of the odd guitar licks in 'People Mover' also if your point is that they're similiar because they're from Chicago; scenes tend to breed bands that sound similiar in some aspect (Savannah, GA anybody)?

No, they don't sound like they write specific Pelican riffs, just the whole mildly heavy instrumental band from Chicago thing is a bit played in my opinion. I see lots of wanna be Isis and Pelican bands, and in two years every one of these kids will be an accountant somewhere. It's just a trend that will pass.

Dude HASH, have even checked out their myspace before? Most of it is actually sludgy, slow, and heavy. http://www.myspace.com/bongripper

I feel like I can't facepalm hard enough at this.

Sure, the tempo is a little slower, but again it seems like they are only mildly heavy and there is none of the "sludge". When I think sludgy, slow, and heavy, I think Leechmilk, Molehill, Grief, Wellington, Noothgrush, Eyehategod, Upsidedown Cross, Graves At Sea, bands like that. This has nothing in common with those bands.

Fuck, you want some slow and heavy? Check out Laudanum, in particular the song "Invoke". That is HEAVY.

Doesn't sound like Pelican.
Good stuff.

That doesn't mean that they never produced great music and had fun, that's really what it's all about. I'd rather have a blast making my favorite type of music with my friends than get remembered any day.

Edit: Also it's totally unfair to bring Noothgrush, Grief, Eyehategod and Graves At Sea into this; those bands are legendary.

Ok, you have a point. I like all those bands. I just used the term to show that some of their stuff is more raw and slower than the post-rockish type of sound that was in the original post. And of course this is nothing compared to those bands, you are comparing a decent band to some of the greatest to ever exist. biggrin.gif
