I actually worked at a pet store for like a year and a half. It was a mom-and-pop store and all the employees there did was talk shit about Petsmart. Congrats on the job dude! But I've got two words for you.... PUPPY MILLS.
I don't know about your local Petsmart, but the only animals available for adoption in the four Petsmarts I've ever shopped in (A couple in SoCal and a couple in Oregon) were strictly used/abandoned pets from the local shelters. There were no puppy mill dogs or cats at these stores unless they had been abandoned by someone.
I once wrote a research paper a few years ago on this very subject and my research for that paper ended up confirming that (only for the last ten-fifteen years or so) most of the big chains stay far away from the puppy mill type animals (because of lawsuits and bad publicity) for pretty much everything but fish and reptiles (for obvious reasons). Adopt from a mall store or small privately owned pet shops however and you're more likely to find the retards trying to hawk a dozen retarded pit bulls, dalmatians (or whatever the flavor of the month happens to be), before they plug them all in the head and whip out another batch for the season.
I wouldn't worry to much about adopting from Petsmart; the cats and dogs there might look lonely and depressed as hell until they are adopted, but the alternative in most cases is the gas chamber.
