It's that time again, the year is drawing to a close. With just over a month to go til new years, we are but sperm ejaculated from the swollen jeb of 2009, rapidly approaching the fertile eggs of 2010.
Aside from the blatantly obvious one, what are your favourite albums of this glorious 9th year of the third millenium. My personnal favourites have been:
The Ghost of a Thousand - New Hopes, New Demonstrations
Every Time I Die - New Junk Aesthetic
Gallows - Grey Britain
The Black Dahlia Murder - Deflorate
Alexisonfire - Old Crows, Young Cardinals
Biffy Clyro - Only Revolutions
I'll give a special mention to Neverender by Coheed and Cambria too, as it's a bad ass live boxed set.

I haven't put my list together just yet, but I do know a few that will make the list:
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
Clutch - Strange Cousins
There's also several that have come out this year that I've not listened to yet, but are sitting in a stack waiting for me to indulge. I had no idea Biffy Clyro came out with a new one -- I've gotta check that out.

There was a lot of stuff I liked this year, but not a lot that I loved. I have probably spent more money this year on music created in the 70's and 90's than anything produced this year.
So far from what I've heard excluding CtS and in no real order...
Freezing Fog - Freezing Fog
Converge - Axe To Fall
Dead Weather - Horehound
Sleepy Sun - Embrace
Mogwai - The Hawk Is Howling
Insect Warfare - World Extermination
William Elliott Whitmore - Animals In The Dark
These Arms Are Snakes - Tail Swallower & Dove
Scul Hazzards - Landlord
Taint - All Bees To The Sea
What I haven't heard but from what I am told is more than likely great.
Baroness - Blue Record
Ancestors - Of Sound Mind
ISIS - Wavering Radiant
Biffy Clyro - Only Revolutions
Latitudes - Agonist

I have trouble placing these in a particular order, as they all appeal to me in very different ways:
Converge - Axe to Fall
Baroness - Blue Record
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Alice in Chains - Black Gives Way to Blue
Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You
Slayer - World Painted Blood
If I could give an honorary shout out to two older albums (from groups not mentioned) I just got around to buying this year that have been topping my play-list I'd say:
High on Fire - Death is This Communion
MachineHead - The Blackening

Then there's a couple that I didn't buy yet in Gates of Slumber and Coalesce, that I will purchase eventually.

the overwhelming majority of cds listed in this thread are very clearly metal acts. without wasting my time doing an actual tally, i'd guess it's over 80% in favor of metal versus any other genre.
radu123
Nov 25 2009, 07:45 AM
despite earlier numbskullery, i'm with you on this one sailor. fight the good fight
metal and rock are easily my favourite genres, and whilst i listen to them predominantly, here are a few off the top of my head:
animal collective - merriweather post pavilion
dirty projectors - bitte orca
vampire weekend - vampire weekend (although you wouldn't be blamed for dismissing it as preppy faggotry)
phoenix - wolfgang amadeus phoenix
everyone raves about grizzly bear - veckatimest, although i don't like i
mos def - the ecstatic
the horrors - primary colours
raekwon - only built for cuban linx 2
methodman and redman - blackout! 2
there have been plenty of fantastic non-metal releases, and those are the only the ones that i know and enjoyed, i'm sure there are dozens of fantastic releases that i haven't heard, or that i dislike but the majority of critics will rave abot.

Ah yes, what is that like? Is it them being weird for the sake of it, or is it actually a good album? All I've heard is that its a much more experimental record, more like their earlier stuff (which I'm not convinced is a good thing)

You're kicking up a stink because the fans of a metal band have mostly put metal albums as their favourites, instead of having a vast, throbbing music taste such as yours, and we're the masturbating, narrow minded cretins? The words "music" and "snob" spring to mind.
ginger ninja
Nov 25 2009, 12:09 PM
Music snobbery is a fine trait in a person. Although I prefer to call myself a 'music nazi'
Anyone who just listens to metal is a narrow minded fool. Discuss.
serge-fabrizio
Nov 25 2009, 12:20 PM
True, but you can't call someone narrow minded just because their favourite albums of the year have mostly been metal. It's like calling someone a fat fuck because they love KFC, it doesn't mean they don't also like salads.

Nov 25 2009, 12:34 PM

sure you can, i just did (but i'm not sure how you worked me calling everyone a cretin into it, or that i'm kicking up a stink)
there isn't anything particularly wrong with liking just metal, it's a fine, comparatively diverse genre, but it's just one style of music
so yeah, i'm right, my being arrogant about it doesn't make me any less right. but i'd still like to be internet friends if that's ok
